I'm fairly certain that everyone loves a good candle. They can create wonderful atmospheres, gorgeous smells and can look very pretty. Candles are generally made from 'soy' wax or 'paraffin' wax.
Paraffin wax is classified as a 'chemical preservative'. It's made from synthetic materials and is essentially, a by-product of petroleum. However, it is not toxic although should not be ingested.
Soy wax was invented in the early 90's as an alternative to beeswax. Natural wax candles were in high demand, however beeswax was a lot more expensive than paraffin. Soy wax is cheaper than beeswax but just as natural. Soy wax is created from partially hydrogenated soy oil, coconut oil and palm oil. In candle form, it is usually mixed with a small portion of beeswax to create economical, natural wax candles.
In Quest, we make it out policy to only sell natural beeswax or soy wax candles as we believe they are better for the environment and that they burn/smell more natural. Both waxes are suitable, safe and clean for candle making and both burn in the same manner. Soy candles can be seen as more economical as they do not use up petroleum which is a limited resource and they are completely biodegradable.
Of course, whatever wax you use is completely personal preference. There is no 'winner' or 'loser' in the wax wars just yet.
What do you think? What candles do you go for and why?
This is great Amelia, my favourite candle is the Guava and Coconut Soy candle it is a wonderful smell.
